American Hotel is a LA Street Art Landmark on the corner of Traction Avenue and Hewitt Street in the DTLA Arts District.
Built in 1904, the hotel has been the epicenter for the underground art scene in Los Angeles. Home to the one the the west coasts premier punk clubs, Al’s Bar, operated on the ground floor of the hotel from 1979-2001.
Al’s Bar famous for it’s graffiti clad interior and exterior saw early performances of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana and Beck just before they hit it big.
The hotel’s parking lot has served as one of the last great graffiti legends yards in Los Angeles. Murals by El Mac, Kofie, the UTI Crew and Kent Twitchell. The Pie Hole LA currently operates on the ground floor.
